BRUCE CHEN Share your memories of Bruce Chen

Chen's career was interesting. He's one of those guys who just kept finding work. Seventeen seasons, 11 teams, an average of just 24 games, 13 starts and 90 innings pitched per year. Always there to fill in when called upon.

I remember how he was thoroughly mediocre for the first 10 years of his career, then something clicked when he went to Kansas City and he rattled off a few good years with them.

He was actually quite solid upon joining the Mets in 2001, going 4-1 with a 2.76 ERA in his first five games. Then his ERA was 7.00 after that.

He's also just one of a few Panamanians to play for the Mets. The others I know are Jonathan Arauz, Ariel Jurado, Juan Berenguer, Manny Acosta and Ruben Tejada.

I've also sent him six autograph requests in my day. He's signed three times, most recently in 2006.

Sometimes I wonder if it was Syndergaard's long blond hair that doomed him. So many people were calling him Thor for so long that he spent far too much time in the weight room trying to transform himself into Thor. That heavy muscle mass inevitably led to injuries, but Thor didn't care. I kept expecting him to take a hand mirror out of his pocket to check his looks between pitches.

NEIL WALKER Share your memories of Neil Walker

I, too, liked Neil Walker. A very good player and quality highlight from the post-2015 World Series high. His 2016 campaign was very good, though it always seemed somewhat unheralded, and his 2017 was pretty solid, as well. They should never have traded him, as they received just Eric Hanhold (who pitched all of 3 games with NY) in return.

In general, he was always a solid ballplayer who never got the recognition he deserved.

I've sent him a couple autograph requests in my day. The first time was from when he was still playing—I received a postcard with a pre-printed auto on it. He never responded the second time.

I'm watching an old episode now (June 9, 2025) and his wife's name is Jane Charmin-Aker. She won $250,000. on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." The show was first broadcast on April 22, 2001.

A surprising fact about Willie is that he had only one postseason home run in his outstanding career. It didn't come in any World Series or even during his most productive years. At the age of 40, Mays slugged a two-run homer in the ninth inning of the Giants' 9-4 defeat to the Pirates in Game Two of the 1971 NLCS at Candlestick Park on October 3rd. This was Willie's last home run as a Giants player, which came exactly twenty years after Bobby Thomson's legendary pennant-winning blast at the Polo Grounds.

Dave was my 2nd cousin. He was the 1st cousin of my mom Carole Schneck Meagher. I met Dave when I was 6. He rode his motorcycle to our house. There stood a man larger than life with a great laugh.

Pete Walker wasn't great, but he had a tidy 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 innings with the club in 2001.

I remember him mostly because he was one of two Walkers on the club in 2002, with the other being Tyler.

The Mets could've had something in Pete, as he went 10-5 with the Blue Jays after Toronto snagged him off waivers...then he had a good year in relief in 2005 (41 G, 3.54 ERA).

Oh well, not one of the most devastating "what could have beens" in team history.

Until I looked him up just now, I didn't realize he'd pitched for the Mets when he first debuted in 1995. You learn something new every day.

I wonder if he opts out after 5 years? People on other boards are calling him Juan Soso. I do hope he puts it together though.

I remember when Olson was a big prospect in the the Orioles system.

He didn't just stink with the Mets, he stunk everywhere—with Baltimore in 2008, he had a WHIP of 1.734 in 26 starts...how desperate must the Orioles have been to keep THAT around for 26 starts??

If he ever held the record for worst Mets ERA ever (not 100% sure he did), he doesn't have to worry anymore ... Stephen Tarpley worsted him by posting an infinite ERA for the club in 2021.

Walker was very promising during the first part of 2021, but his second half was so bad it looked like a really mediocre year. So his second season, the one that DIDN'T net him an All-Star selection (as 2021 did, still his only AS selection) actually ended up being his better campaign. And it was really solid—12-5, 3.49 ERA. It was a very good year, but it made him a bit too expensive.

I'm glad the Mets didn't bring him back. In his first two years away, with Philly, he had a 5.27 ERA and 81 ERA+ (though he managed an 18-13 record somehow).

Walker, all-in-all, is a good memory from those seasons, which are astoundingly a few years distant now, and slowly fading into the memory.

Also, I sent him an autograph reqwuest through the D-Backs in 2017, but he never responded.

TIM CORCORAN Share your memories of Tim Corcoran

Tim Corcoran was largely inconsequential for the 1986 Mets, but the team was 4-2 in the games in which he played, so in his own small way he helped contribute to a handful of that club's 108 victories. The only run he scored came when he was brought home on a dinger by pitcher Rick Aguilera.

Also, I've sent him two autograph requests in my day with no response.

JAY KLEVEN Share your memories of Jay Kleven

I just listened back to the WMCA radio broadcast of the 1976 Mayor's Trophy Game. Played on June 14, it was on a scheduled off day for the Mets, who were in the midst of playing 26 days in a row, with a pair of doubleheaders thrown in, and fresh of flying in from San Francisco after an 11-game West Coast road trip.

With rested bodies at a minimum, the Mets called up Jay Kleven to start at catcher in the contest. He had yet to debut in the Majors, and wouldn't officially until June 20. Despite hitting just .174 at AAA that year, he made a fine showing of himself against the Yankees, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and 2 RBI. The rest of the Mets didn't do so well as they lost 8-4.

Of the experience, Kleven said, "I go back to Tidewater tomorrow, but I’ll take this biggest thrill of my life with me. Playing in front of all those people is something I’ll never forget."
