I have no complaints about Mendoza yet. When he first came aboard, I thought "oh great, another dumb experiment," but he's proven to be a very effective skipper. He led the team to the postseason in his first year with the club and is 125-95 (.568 W%) as of this writing. Here's hoping to many more successful seasons!

Manuel was so promising when he took over in 2008. What a breath of fresh air. The team was dogging it all year, then suddenly Manuel takes over and makes the club almost a playoff team. Except of course they had another terrible collapse toward the end of the year, like in 2007.

But that first couple months he was with them inspired so much hope.

But it was all a tease. The team fell apart in 2009 and 2010 and Manuel was eventually gone.

For that brief spell in 2008, however, he sure looked like a genius.

Also he didn't respond to the autograph request I sent him in 2013.

I actually didn't hate Callaway. That whole 2017-2020 era was a blur so it's almost hard to believe he ever even managed for them, but I thought he was promising. His 2019 and final season with the club, when he went 86-76, was indication of that.

He's also one of the trickier answers to the question "which Mets managers have winning percentages of .500 or better with the team?"

(the others are Johnson, Randolph, Showalter, Hodges, Valentine, Harrelson and currently Mendoza).

Also he didn't respond to my 2022 through-the-mail autograph request.

I thought the Mets getting Buck Showalter was an awesome move. Finally a name manager, not some experiment that was probably not going to work, which had been the pattern post-Collins. He came to the club with over 1,500 wins and three Manager of the Year selections to his name. Finally someone good.

And what did he do his first year? He led them to 101 victories, their first 100-win season since 1988. Awesome!

Sure, 2023 was a dud and he was shown the door, but 2022 proved what can happen when you actually invest in a good manager.

Some 'big Hall' folks have considered his Hall of Fame case, but I don't see it. 1,500 wins is a big milestone, sure, and to maintain a career .500 winning percentage over so many games is quite the accomplishment. Not to mention his accolades. But his lack of postseason success really hurts his case. He never even won a pennant, which is kind of astounding.

As we would drive to a music gig in VT in the evening, we would listen to WFAN radio and the the Mets broadcast with the great Bob Murphy. One night he said: “ Baseball? It’s a funny game. A game of many redeeming features!”

Murph on the radio accompanied us many an evening driving around to our music gigs. It had to be a night game to be able to get WFAN in VT. Quote: “Oh……Baseball, it’s a funny game…. A game of redeeming features!”
