McLean might be something special. He owns a 3.15 ERA and 9.4 K/9 in his three-year minor league career and is 5-3 with a 1.81 ERA in 9 starts in the minors this season (including a 2-2, 2.31 line at Triple-A). The Mets have A LOT of really good young pitching and McLean looks like one of the more promising hurlers.

Played in a senior softball league with Lou about two years ago. Lou played third base and was one of the better hitters on the team. He was smooth and steady at third not to mention he was in his mid eighties at the time. I had no idea he had played professionally, he was unassuming and didn't act like a know-it-all in a softball league full of know-it-alls. He reminded me of Ray Bolger the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. RIP Lou.

I was Byron's catcher for his junior and senior year at Batavia High School and also in American Legion Baseball. My first comment about Byron would involve his character which was simply top shelf. Byron was a great pitcher. Drafted #1 in the 2cnd round in 1966. The 23rd pick in the nation. I caught 4 no hitters by him - including a perfect game on April 15 1966 where only two batters put a ball in play - both dribblers back to the mound. He struck out everyone else. We remain great friends to this day.
