Share your memories of Brian Bohanon

I really liked Bohanon. He did a good job for us down the stretch in '97 and was a valuable long relief guy in '98. I would have liked to have had him as our number 5 guy in the rotation for the past couple of years. He did a great job with the Dodgers for the rest of '98 and did ok with the Rockies last year too. Phillips made a mistake to use him to get back McMichael. He could've used someone else, just as we could use Bohanon in our rotation right now.

Bohanon was a very serviceable pitcher, good as a starting pitcher and as a long reliever. Valentine tried unsuccessfully to make him a set-up man before his trade to the Dodgers, but Bohanon was not suited for that role.Besides his pitching, the man could really hit. A couple of times, they had Ordonez bunt so Bohanon could hit, and it worked at least once. Bohanon once had a pinch single for the Mets, I think in a extra-inning game. You guys remember his emergency start against the Giants in place of the depressed Pete Harnisch in April 1997? He gave us a solid seven or so innings out of absolutely nowhere, and had a pretty decent 1997 season, all together.

I remember watching Brian pitch for North Shore High School in Houston, Texas. Even at 16 and 17 years of age he had a fastball in the upper 90's and good control. I knew he was going to make the pros. The sports media was comparing him to Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens. He never became that but he was still a decent pitcher and at least got over ten years in the pros.

Not knowing enough, I think we gave up on Bohanon too soon. This guy was so about wins, he didn't care about his stats. He just won. When he went to the Rockies, he was happy. He said he did not mind what Denver would do to his ERA. He was ready to pitch innings - and he did. What the heck. If your ERA is 5.00 in Coors Field, while the others pitchers' combined ERA is 6.00, you have a good chance to win.I liked this guy, as I do any overweight guy who does his job nonetheless. Guys like Bohanon, Staub, Kranepool (at times), and Kruk give guys like me hope. As for Mo, well...

Gregory beat me to it; I also recall the Mets' eighth hitter bunting so that Bohanon can come up and swing away. And I recall that strategy working a couple of times.Was it only yesterday that the Mets had pitchers like Brian that can actually hit? These days, we're lucky that guys like Al Leiter can make contact on a bunt, let alone get a single.

Brian Bohanon was a decent pitcher in 97 and 98, and yes, he does sorta have the Babe Ruth resemblance. Of course, he wasn't as good of a pitcher, let alone a player compared to the Sultan of Swat. Nonetheless, Bohanon had some good, yet unexpected contributions in 97 and probably should have stayed in the rotation all year long. Although his three career home runs occurred as a member of the Rockies, Bohanon hit well with the Mets and he looked like quite the strapping hitter too.
