 The Mets had a few top prospects debut offensively this year. Brett Baty was mediocre in his brief debut and Mark Vientos was mediocre in his. You can even throw Nick Plummer in there—still just 25, he was a former first round pick that the Mets pulled off the scrap heap. He underwhelmed.

But here's Francisco Alvarez. A Once-In-A-Lifetime Talent™. Surely he'll light up the stage, right??

Nope.

Sorry folks. He's just another rookie to me until he proves he's actually good. Fool me once...

 Alex, you're totally mistaken on Alvarez.

For some context, Mike Schmidt's full first year, he batted .196 and struck out 136 times in 437 plate appearances.

In 40 at bats in September 1981, Cal Ripken Jr. batted .128. They can't all be Gregg Jefferies!

Alvarez hit 1/3 as many home runs as Thomas Nido in 11 at bats, so it stands to reason that we would have helped the Mets a lot more if he'd been called up earlier.

 I'm still not completely sold on him, but his power, at least, is awesome. If he can hit 25 home runs as a 21-year-old, I can only imagine what the future holds as he ages ... but he really needs to get that batting average and OBP up. Also, his defense is pretty awful—he led the league in errors at catcher and passed balls in 2023—so he needs a lot of work there, too.

But I like him. He's fun to watch. Even if he doesn't pan out in the long run, he actually inspires hope. While Baty and Vientos continued to let us down, Alvarez at least showed glimpses of how good he can be.

 This monster mashes. My nickname for him is “El Matador”. It’s not only his killer bat; it’s his determination to gun down baserunners (what’s Spanish for ‘sniper’?) and his energy and work ethic.

With him in the lineup this year, the Mets are 21-8, and when he starts they’re 18-8.

Oh, and by the way, as of this writing, he’s only 22 years and 220 days old.

 His 2023 was much more exciting than his 2024, but pound-for-pound his 2024 was slightly better than his 2023. Not in counting stats (obviously, since he missed so much time), but his average went up 28 points, his OBP rose 23 points and his OPS+ increased five points. His slugging, and consequently his OPS, dipped a tad, but the overall improvements are promising. And let's not forget he is still just 22 years old.

He was super sluggish early in the season, but after a 3-for-5 day on June 17, his fortunes began to change for the better, with is average peaking at .316 on June 28. He struggled mightily after that, hitting .185 between July and August, but he redeemed himself with a .254/.357/.542 line in September. His OBP and slugging percentage in the final month are especially promising.

And remember, he's still just 22.

He's got so much fire, so much passion. The team was in the doldrums when he wasn't around. Folks credit Francisco Lindor's move in the lineup and his resurgence to the change in the team's fortunes, but Alvarez returning and reintroducing his spark was just as vital. You cannot quantify how much spirit a guy like Alvarez adds to the team.

I grow more bullish on Francisco by the day.
