Alvarez served no major purpose and his acquisition was unnecessary and pointless, however it was an interesting novelty having a former speedskating Olympian medalist playing on the team. Alvarez was a novelty in multiple facets, as he was also a 30-year-old rookie in 2020.
I'm of the mind that if you are going to go out and get a guy like Alvarez, just call up a kid from the minors and let him fulfill his big league dream.
Ben Gamel was the original "we don't know why you're here, but we need to fill that last roster spot" player, the it was briefly Pablo Reyes, then Alvarez took the helm for the final part of the season.
Gotta give him credit though. He was trying his hardest to help the team win, despite the fact that he knew he wouldn't be on the playoff roster. Despite going hitless in nine at-bats—and though my previous words aren't glowing—I have no real, true negative feelings about him. Just another memorable face on the amazing 2024 team.
